Second Harvest Heartland, Minnesota
Karen Spitzfaden is the Director of Consumer Insights and Digital Strategy at Second Harvest Heartland. In this role, she developed the Hunger Continuum and designed and led a statewide study of hunger and food insecurity in Minnesota. Driven by the belief that understanding people and their motivations is imperative for sustainable growth in all sectors, Karen has worked in state agencies, nonprofits, and corporations of all sizes. Her expertise is in leveraging both quantitative and qualitative methods to develop strategy that centers an organization’s constituents and acknowledges the context in which those people live.
Karen holds a BA from Rice University and an MBA and MPP from the University of Minnesota. Although she is now a Minneapolis resident, Karen’s interest in our food systems originated while growing up near her family’s farms in western Illinois. Karen is an avid women’s basketball fan, would always rather be outside, and volunteers each summer with Experience Camps.
