Guaranteed Care Income Pilot San Francisco, California
Rachel West is the Program Director of the Guaranteed Care Income San Francisco pilot. I am a mother and grandmother, and an immigrant from Africa who has been a welfare mother. I’ve worked in the informal economy to survive and feed my children and have faced poverty. I first became involved with the Global Women’s Strike in the UK as a young woman and was part of a campaign fighting for money for mothers, in response to intended cuts to the family allowance benefit in the UK. When I moved to the US, I helped to organize for resources and rights for sex workers as part of the US PROStitutes Collective and co-founded the In Defense of Prostitute Women’s Safety Project, which does public advocacy to prevent violence against sex workers in San Francisco. Guaranteed Care Income San Francisco is a pilot program for single mothers who are at risk of criminalization and/or of losing their children to child welfare. The pilot began in May 2024 for provides $2000 a month to 10 low-income single mothers in San Francisco for one year.
