New Mexico Dept. of Health, New Mexico
Sarah Flores-Sievers B.S., MPA
WIC and Farmers Market Director/ Food and Nutrition Bureau Chief, New Mexico Department of Health
Since 2012, I have had the privilege of serving as the WIC and Farmers Market Director for the New Mexico Department of Health and recently became the Food and Nutrition Bureau Chief. Before that, I served as the WIC Director for the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos, where I worked closely with Native communities to ensure access to critical nutrition services and support. My commitment to improving food security and working to bridge gaps in healthcare and nutrition access, particularly in underserved communities has been central to my career. I am a member of the Governor’s Hunger Task Force and previously had the honor of serving as the Chair of the National WIC Association (NWA).
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Driven by the belief that every WIC family deserves equitable access to essential services, I am dedicated to advocating for improvements. These include the integration of advanced technology to enhance service delivery, improve accessibility and health outcomes. One notable achievement is New Mexico WIC's development of the first state-level integrated participant data system, streamlining program enrollment. This system automatically connects families applying for SNAP, Medicaid, or TANF directly into our WIC system.
In 2021, New Mexico WIC was the first state to implement a mobile electronic payment program at all its approved farmers’ market locations. This innovative program allows families to make instant payments through smartphones or electronic cards, further enhancing convenience and accessibility for all.
In these roles, I have focused on enhancing the health and nutrition of vulnerable populations and ensuring that families have the tools they need to lead healthy, sustainable lives.
